Island 197 - Housay, Out Skerries, Shetland

Housay has been joined to the neighbouring island of Bruray by a bridge since 1899.   The name is derived from Old Norse and means "House Island".  The highest point on the island is the Wart of Mioness at 48 metres.   The Church, cemetery, community centre and a shop/post office are located on Housay.

The site of a battle pund, a stone rectangle of large boulders, can be seen on Housay.  It was where blood feuds were once settled.  However we couldn't find it.  I think the map in the leaflet we had was a bit confusing and that we were looking in the wrong place.

In 1960 in the south west of the Mioness Peninsula at the south west end of Housay at a wonderfully named place called Dregging Geos, a silver ducatoon and a 1711 gold ducat were found.  They had come from the wreck of the De Liefde, which was wrecked off Out Skerries in 1711.

This was the only indoor place we found on Out Skerries to sit for a while - other than the ladies toilet on Bruray!
